For this great price, the The Chronicles Of Narnia - The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe [DVD] [2005] is highly respected and is always a regular choice with most people. Buena Vista Home Entertainment have added some nice touches and this results in good value.
Director (and co-screenwriter) Andrew Adamson, a veteran of the Shrek franchise, knows his way around a fantasy-based experience story, and he sensibly keeps the story moving when it might easily become slowed down and tiresome. Narnia is, of course, a Christian allegory and the symbology is absolutely there (as it ought to be, otherwise it would not be the story Lewis wrote), but audiences aren't overturned the head with it, and in the hands of another director it might easily have actually become pedantic. The focus is squarely on the kids and their experiences. The 4 young actors are respectable in their functions, especially considering the size of the task placed on their shoulders, but it's the young Georgie Henley as the curious Lucy who sticks out. This isn't a film that wildly is successful, and in the long run it won't have the very same effect as the Harry Potter franchise, but it is well done, and kids will get swept up in the experience. Note: Narnia does include battle scenes that some moms and dads may think about too violent for more youthful kids.--Dan Vancini
